Best Street Styles: Tokyo Fashion Week

Yara Gutierrez

Tokyo Fashion Week wrapped up what may have been its most successful week since the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing more buyers and visitors from abroad to the Japanese capital for the Fall/Winter 2024 season. Though the agenda was mostly made up of local firms, the 35 actual displays of the festival included Canadian designers as well as the Finnish company Marimekko. Mainstays of Japanese fashion, like Mikio Sakabe, joined up-and-coming firms on the program. The futuristic clothing company Anrealage, which made headlines for dressing Beyoncé in a "color-changing" gown for her "Renaissance" tour, had its menswear brand debut domestically on Saturday, capping off the week in style. The event, which is currently known as Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo, is also known for its bold street style, with guests seen sporting everything from gothic chic to quirky Lolita-style fashion.

Where Beyoncé Knowles goes, many follow. With the superstar’s brand new country album already captivating audiences everywhere, fans and the fashion world are catching cowboy fever. Further fueling the interest are the Western-wear outfits she’s been wearing to promote the release, including her album cover, where she sports a pair of white Paris Texas boots. On the runways in New York and Europe, Western wear made frequent appearances in the fall collections from Schiaparelli, Isabel Marant, and Louis Vuitton. And Taylor Swift’s go-to bootmaker, Christian Louboutin, also embraced cowboy core in his fall 2024 line.

Furry textures are in demand due to the viral mob wife aesthetic, which draws inspiration from the bold fashion of created mafia characters in movies and television, and designers and stores are taking notice. “You couldn’t escape the importance of texture” this season, said Linda Fargo, director of women’s fashion at Bergdorf Goodman, highlighting the prominence of “shaggy robe coats, just-out-of-the-rain faux furs, shearling and more shearling [and] fuzzy-wuzzy accessories.” WWD’s Booth Moore observed Michael Kors’ “outerwear was designed to make an entrance,” as well as Mongolian shearling puffball coats in pastel colors worn over languid slips.

Fashion is an ever-changing landscape, with trends evolving rapidly and often. For the modern consumer, staying up-to-date with these trends can sometimes feel like a daunting task. But keeping up with the ever-changing world of fashion can be a daunting task for the average consumer. With trends evolving every three months, staying in the loop requires both time and money. Consumers carefully consider their purchases, aiming for pieces that not only reflect current trends but also fit within their budgets. Staying updated with the latest fashion trends is all about staying informed, being open to new ideas, and embracing your personal style.
