The Evolution of Christmas Fashion

Jordan Martinez

Christmas clothing has changed over the last 100 years in many ways, including the style of Santa's suit, the popularity of ugly Christmas sweaters, and the way people dress for the holidays:

Santa Suit:

Thomas Nast's drawings for Harper's Weekly in the late 1800s established the red suit as the standard for Santa. Haddon Sundblom's work for Coca-Cola in the 1930s popularized the jolly, bearded man we know today.

Ugly Christmas Sweaters:

The popularity of ugly Christmas sweaters peaked in 2014, but the trend has evolved to include other holiday clothing. Now, people wear ugly Christmas dresses, socks, hats, scarves, and pajamas.

In the past, families would dress up for Christmas photos. Today, people often dress casually or stay in their pajamas.
