The History of Advent Calendar's + Best Advent Calendar's of 2023

Carol Ozoria

The Advent calendar is German in origin, just as many other parts of contemporary Christmas traditions. German Protestants started counting down the days of Advent, in the early nineteenth century. One way they did this was by lighting a candle on that day or, even simpler, by drawing a line in chalk on doors or walls. The earliest recorded handcrafted wooden Advent calendar was constructed in 1851 as a result of a new tradition that involved hanging a holy image each day.

Many years have passed since then, and today, advent calendars are used by brands and companies to advertise Christmas collections. Each year, companies make calanders, starting the countdown until Christmas. Some may include 12 days, 15, 24, or the full 25 days of Christmas. Each box marked by the days holds some kind of gift or surprise for buyers to open and use.

With that being said here are some of my favorite Advent Calendars this holiday season.
