This year, we welcome March with happy arms. After all, this is all we have been waiting for! The days get longer and hotter after months of cold, short days. We celebrate a lot of things in March, such as Saint Patrick's Day. But this month is special; during the month of March, we celebrate women all over America. During this month, when we celebrate all women, there's a special day called International Women’s Day. This special day lands on March 8th and is a global celebration that honors the achievements and contributions of women while advocating for women's rights and gender equality across the world.
Here's how March came to be: WOMEN'S HSITORY MONTH!
Women's History first started as women's history WEEK. It began as a local celebration in dozens of schools in Santa Rosa California(1978) where locals came together and held small parades and participated in essay writing competitions. The idea soon caught on with other communities across the country. In 1980, president Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women's History Week. Soon after, U.S. Congress passed a resolution establishing a national celebration of Women everywhere in America. Six years after, the National Women's History project successfully urged congress to expand this celebration to the entire month of March.
WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH THEME 2024:
This year we celebrate women who advocate for equality, diversity, and inclusion.
