History of Valentines Day: Ancient Rome

Aryanie

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14th every year. It is a day to experience love and affection towards friends, family, and others. Valentine's Day has a history that goes back to ancient Rome! According to Brianna, it says that the original name for Valentine was Lupercalia. Lupercalia Day was forbidden to be celebrated because of Pope Gebsius at the end of the 5th century. It was later replaced with Valentine's Day, which was not a celebration of love until the 14th century. One thing that is debated is that you should be able to show love to loved ones every day instead of on one holiday. People have also said Valentine's Day has lost its true meaning by becoming commercialized, with some ads showing that getting this gift means you love them. The more expensive they are, the more love you have for them. Valentine's Day should be a day that you celebrate the love you have for someone and the love you have for yourself.
