Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14 of February every year. It is a holiday celebrating love and romance around the world. But is that how the holiday started?
We don't know, what is currently being speculated is that the holiday comes from the honoring of two separate men, both executed on February 14 named Valentine. One of the men being a wedding officiate making him a proponent of love.
The official start of the holiday is weirder than expected. In Rome, priests would run around naked in the streets slapping women with animal blood (this would promote fertility). After priests do this men would select women (from the ones that were slapped) from a random jar that they would be with for the next year until they marry or the next February 14.
Cupid who is seen as Valentine's Day's mascot is part of Roman mythology. Cupid was the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. He was known for shooting arrows at both gods and humans, causing them to fall instantly in love with one another.
This celebration might seem a little odd after understanding the history but the fact that people are shown love and appreciation on this day should be enough to celebrate.
